Miesha Tate grateful One Championship being cautious as Dana White pushes ahead with UFC 249 despite coronavirus
- Former women’s bantamweight queen happy to see One cancel shows but says UFC president White ‘won’t do anything illegal’
- ‘I appreciate we err on the side of caution because I don’t want to get sick, I don’t want people to die,’ says One vice-president Tate
One Championship has postponed the two closed-door events it had scheduled for Singapore this month. Former UFC bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, who now works as an executive for the Singapore-based martial arts organisation, is confident delaying these events was the right decision.
“It's a difficult call to make because we obviously want to deliver live sports because no one else is able to do that right now” Tate told the Post from her home in Singapore. “We would love to be able to present the great sport of martial arts for people to watch, but we're only going to do that if it's safe.
“We've been ahead of the curve in every aspect when it comes to safety and we’re definitely not looking to challenge the authorities and what they're trying to do to mitigate this process,” Tate added. “It was the right decision to make, and we’re looking to throw live events again as soon as a safe opportunity presents itself.”
Tate credits One Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong for guiding the organisation through the coronavirus pandemic.
“Chatri is a battle-tested leader,” she said of the One boss. “He’s very wise. He’s seasoned. He’s experienced.
