UFC 249: Daniel Cormier wants fights in China as coronavirus continues to prevent US locations
- Cormier says he and UFC president Dana White are ‘thinking along the same lines’ and will keep event alive
- The former double champion recommends China as fight location because ‘they’ve had no new cases in like five days’
Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier has a plan for coronavirus-stricken UFC 249 involving China and mass “carpools”.
The event – headlined by lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson and women’s strawweights Jessica Andrade vs Rose Namajunas – was originally scheduled for Brooklyn on April 19 before the deadly coronavirus halted most sports.
“This is why I’m not the president of the UFC, because I would pick [the fighters] all up. I’d pick them all up at once,” said Cormier (22-2) to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.
“I would take my jet and I would say, hey if we’re Jessica Andrade in Brazil ... say there’s a whole bunch of Brazilian fighters on the card, I’d say you guys all meet at Jessica Andrade’s house, I’m coming over there.
“Rose Namajunas, on you’re in Colorado? Oh, there’s a guy in Oklahoma? You guys meet in Kansas somewhere. We all fly together,” he added.
