UFC: Dustin Poirier thinks Khabib beats Tony Ferguson – but backs Justin Gaethje to trouble champ
- ‘If Kevin Lee was able to outwrestle Tony, Khabib’s definitely gonna be able to do it,’ says Poirier
- ‘The Diamond’ thinks Gaethje has the skill set to give UFC lightweight champion problems, however
Dustin Poirier has first-hand experience of just how good Khabib Nurmagomedov is – and he doesn’t think Tony Ferguson has the tools to break the UFC lightweight champion’s unbeaten record either.
The Russian (28-0) decisively beat former interim champion Poirier via third-round submission at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi last September, and will defend his title against Ferguson (25-3) in April.
Both men are riding 12-fight win streaks in the UFC but “The Diamond” is not optimistic we’ll see a new champ crowned.
“I think Khabib beats Ferguson, man,” Poirier told Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “It’s MMA, anything can happen for sure, but I think he’s gonna be the better competitor.
“If Kevin Lee was able to outwrestle Tony, and I thought Danny Castillo did the same thing [in 2014], Khabib’s definitely gonna be able to do it.”
