“The Korean Zombie” Jung Chan-sung made light work of Frankie Edgar in front of his home crowd at UFC Fight Night Busan. But the first-round TKO is all the more impressive given he was seeing double. Jung dropped veteran and former lightweight champion Edgar multiple times before referee Marc Goddard stepped in after just three minutes and 18 seconds, sending the Sajik Arena into raptures. “Zombie” declared, matter of factly, “I want [Alex] Volkanovski” when he grabbed the microphone after. But any fans salivating over that match-up with the newly crowned featherweight champion might be waiting a while. “Honestly, it doesn’t matter when that happens,” Jung said at the post-event press conference. “This is my first time actually announcing this, but right now my eyes are not that good.” Those that follow Jung on Instagram might have already known, but he has been suffering with an eye condition that makes him see double. “So even right now, everyone in this room, I’m seeing doubles of everything, I’ve got double vision,” he said in the arena’s gymnasium, which served as a makeshift media centre. That problem has really become a habit for me to just slant my head. The timing seems perfect, then, to match give fan favourite Jung his long-awaited second crack at the title, after he went down swinging in the fourth round against former featherweight king Jose Aldo in 2013. There’s only one problem – given the length and manner of his reign, Holloway has an argument for an immediate rematch. There’s also the looming spectre of former contender Brian Ortega, who was originally set to fight “Zombie” in Busan before partially tearing his ACL in training just over two weeks out. “Yeah, it doesn’t matter,” Jung said, when asked if would still be willing to fight Ortega. “I’ll do whatever the UFC tells me to do.” Jung would be wise to remember the case of Edgar, who took a fight against Ortega in February 2018 after Holloway withdraw from a scheduled title defence because of injury. Edgar suffered the first stoppage loss of his career, and had to wait another 17 months to get another crack at the title. Or consider Jung, who was on the cusp of a title shot going into a fight with Edgar in November 2018. Edgar was pulled from the bout because of injury, and Yair Rodriguez stepped in as a late replacement. Rodriguez knocked Jung out in the final second of the fifth round with a sensational spinning back elbow. The point is, when a fighter is considered to be the next contender, it’s sometimes best to sit things out. We can only wait and see how it unfolds. For now, we should just marvel at how the “Zombie” was able to piece up a legend like Edgar so bad when he was seeing two of him. “The thing is, we’re humans, we adjusted things,” he said, making it sound easy. “I was able to adjust with the eye condition that I have, just slightly here and there, I got used to it.” “I knew for the whole five rounds if there was a punch there was gonna be a knockout,” he said. “But I didn’t think it was gonna end so quick in the first round.”
