Conor McGregor has just spent a week in and around Russia lathering himself with praise and hype – but his PR antics are not fooling anybody except the former UFC double champ and his hermit fans.

The 31-year-old (professional MMA record 21-4) revealed his plans for his long-awaited comeback having tapped to a Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) neck crank in October 2018. McGregor strolled into the Parimatch press conference in Moscow with his usual broad-shouldered gait and a “proper” bottle of whiskey by his side.

To be fair, the Irishman still had some one-liners in his locker, for example his analysis of the rest of the lightweight division: “I am going to go through the entire roster like a chainsaw through butter”. And while he may have momentarily convinced us that the hunger in his belly and the glint in his eye is legitimate, MMA fans have simply been let down too many times.

The sad reality is that these promotional stunts and philanthropic tours are an attempt to cloud his ongoing sexual assault investigations and the other various controversies he has collected in the last couple of years. Dolly-throwing, phone-confiscating, old man-punching – take your pick, they are all near-impossible to forgive.
So for the former king of the UFC throne to sit there calling shots on his comeback fight date, location, and blueprints to his “season” – which includes taking on the winner of Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz’s BMF belt (if it happens) and a rematch with Khabib – is quite rich.
