The Takedown | UFC: Conor McGregor comeback presser a shameful PR stunt to distract from sex assault allegations
- Journalist attempting to ask Irishman about allegations is shut down by Moscow press conference host
- McGregor looking to bury the lede but could have saved himself the trip, with Nate Diaz’s positive drugs test dominating the agenda
Conor McGregor has just spent a week in and around Russia lathering himself with praise and hype – but his PR antics are not fooling anybody except the former UFC double champ and his hermit fans.
The 31-year-old (professional MMA record 21-4) revealed his plans for his long-awaited comeback having tapped to a Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) neck crank in October 2018. McGregor strolled into the Parimatch press conference in Moscow with his usual broad-shouldered gait and a “proper” bottle of whiskey by his side.
To be fair, the Irishman still had some one-liners in his locker, for example his analysis of the rest of the lightweight division: “I am going to go through the entire roster like a chainsaw through butter”. And while he may have momentarily convinced us that the hunger in his belly and the glint in his eye is legitimate, MMA fans have simply been let down too many times.
