World Lacrosse Super Sixes: Philippines vow to take last step in Hong Kong after tight loss
The Filipinos fall 2 goals short against Japanese powerhouses Fogostealers, while Hong Kong lose to Germany again to finish fourth
A much-improved Philippines side have vowed to come back better and stronger next year after swallowing a tough two-goal defeat in the World Lacrosse Super Sixes men’s final on Sunday.
The Philippines, who finished sixth and last in last year’s edition, took on powerhouse Fogostealers at the Aberdeen Sports Ground in a nail-biting gold medal match and went toe to toe with the Japanese before falling to a narrow 21-19 loss and finishing with a silver medal.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Filipino head coach gave credit to their opponents and said there was much for his players to take away from the final setback.
“The Fogo guys made some pretty good stops towards the end,” Justin Manjares said. “We made a very good run in the fourth quarter, but their goalie made a nice save with less than 40 seconds left in a one-goal game.
“It wasn’t a difference in the game, but it was a nice back-and-forth battle, and in a two-goal game, they capitalised on two of our mistakes.”
The United States-born Manjares was adamant his team would bounce back next year and with just one goal in mind.
