World Games Series in Hong Kong: city’s wushu athletes earn spots at Chengdu 2025
Roller sports and cheerleading also feature as three-day series concludes at Go Park Sai Sha, with the carnival a bigger draw than the sport
The inaugural three-day World Games Series drew to a close at Hong Kong’s Go Park Sai Sha on Sunday with recognition for the city’s representatives in two of the three sports featured.
Offering qualification for next year’s 12th edition of the World Games in Chengdu, the series’ first leg showcased wushu, roller sports and cheerleading, and local participants took the opportunity to book their places in the first of those.
Lydia Sham Hui-yu won gold in the women’s Changquan-Jianshu-Qiangshu combined event on Sunday, after fellow Hongkongers Lau Po-yan and Yeung Chung-hei did likewise in the women’s Nanquan-Nandao and men’s Taijiquan-Tiajijian combined categories on Saturday.
Juanita Mok Uen-ying took bronze in the women’s Taijiquan-Tiajijian combined event, although only category winners earned a spot in the 2025 Games proper.
In roller sports, Jessica Loo and Leung Yuet-ling added a silver and a bronze respectively in women’s speed slalom, but there was no local joy in cheerleading as the hosts finished last among the 10 teams.
The World Games involves sports and disciplines that are not contested in the Olympics. It will take place in Chengdu from August 7 to 17 next year, before which a second leg of the qualifying series is planned in the southwestern Chinese city next February or March.
