Fat Boy 10s: Hong Kong Scottish take top honours but rugby and charities the winners
- Tournament holds its third edition in the city, featuring nine men’s, six women’s and nine veterans’ teams
- Proceeds go to medical missions in the Philippines, and grass-roots rugby programmes in the Philippines, Laos and Hong Kong
Hong Kong Scottish claimed two of the trophies at the Fat Boy 10s rugby tournament at Kowloon’s King’s Park on Saturday.
But while Scottish came out on top on the pitch, there were smiles all round off it as the event held its third edition in the city, having previously also been hosted in the Philippines before the pandemic disrupted international sporting events.
Hosted by Hong Kong Pot Bellied Pigs RFC and Hong Kong China Rugby, the tournament’s latest staging featured nine men’s, six women’s and nine veterans’ teams.
The men’s and women’s crowns both went Scottish’s way, with Hong Kong Football Club proving best of the vets, but for organiser Ross Bendix the day had a broader purpose.
“We are so proud of the local rugby community for coming out and joining the Fat Boys 10s, women’s men’s and vets all supported along with a great domestic helper mini-tournament,” Bendix said.
“Today again rugby was the winner. We roll on to the Philippines in September for our next edition.”
The proceeds from the day will go to medical missions in the Philippines, providing essential healthcare to families in need, and also to grass-roots rugby programmes in the Philippines, Laos and Hong Kong.
