Asian Games 2023: from rookies to veterans, 10 Hong Kong athletes worth watching as they chase success in Hangzhou

  • Triathlete Jason Ng will be making his Asian Games debut this time around, and is ranked eighth best in the region

Hong Kong is sending its largest contingent ever to the Asian Games, with Olympic champions, world-record holders and promising youngsters among their number.

Almost a 1,000 people will represent the city over the next two and a bit weeks, with 680 athletes competing across 40 sports, and technical officials in everything from cricket to beach volleyball also involved.

While the likes of Tokyo Games gold medallist Cheung Ka-long and double silver medallist Siobhan Haughey are expected to lead Hong Kong’s charge in the individual events, the men’s rugby team will defend the gold medals they won five years ago in Jakarta.

But Hangzhou will also be when the next generation of stars emerges.

Triathlete Jason Ng Tai-long makes his Asian Games debut this year as the top-ranked Hongkonger and eighth-best in the region, while fencer Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan goes into the tournament having won gold at the World University Games earlier this year.
