World University Games: Cheung Ka-long adds a third gold for Hong Kong, as best ever medal tally swells
- Olympic champion defeats France’s Pierre Loisel 15-12 in the men’s individual foil final on Friday in Chengdu
- Cody Wong and Coleman Wong are also guaranteed podium spot in mixed doubles of the tennis competition
Fencing star Cheung Ka-long added a third gold medal for Hong Kong at the FISU World University Games in Chengdu after taking down France’s Pierre Loisel 15-12 in the men’s individual foil final on Friday.
With no third-place play-off, fellow Hongkonger Ryan Choi Chun-yin, who lost 15-12 to Cheung in the semi-finals, also pocketed a bronze medal alongside Jan Jurkiewicz of Poland.
The two medals secured at the Pidu Sports Centre Natatorium – coupled with Coleman Wong Chak-lam and Cody Wong Hong-yi reaching the last four in the mixed doubles of the tennis – mean the city’s medal tally will reach 10, more than doubling Hong Kong’s previous best of four, achieved in Taipei in 2017.
Cheung told Chinese media after his win: “I had ups and downs in the middle of the season and felt that I was not performing well. But being able to adjust my mindset gave me a sense of accomplishment.”
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung congratulated Hong Kong’s athletes on their medal haul.
