The city’s women triumphed but there was heartbreak too for the hosts at the Hong Kong Lacrosse Open as the men’s team lost their final by a golden goal.
They were beaten 6-5 by Japanese side FOGO on Monday, their first loss of the tournament after they had swept through the tournament until that point, winning all five previous games.
But familiar foes were responsible in what was a repeat of the 2019 final, which Hong Kong had also lost.
The home team trailed by 2-1 at the break at the Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Centre in Tseung Kwan O.

Goals by Wesley Wong See-hon and Haydn Cheung Hoi-yin early after the restart put them on top but the Japanese restored parity.
The hosts led 5-3 with less than two minutes to go in regular time, yet the visitors refused to give in, forcing their way back into it with two goals inside 30 seconds to make it 5-all.
Daichi Tanaka then provided the winning goal just 46 seconds into overtime to stun Hong Kong and retain FOGO’s title.
“I cannot describe the disappointment, really – we were leading with just two minutes left but failed to hold on to the momentum,” captain Kelvin Mak Ho-chun said. “We could not maintain the rhythm, we lost possession and were outnumbered [in the defensive zone], and conceded the late goals.
“We beat them in the round-robin, but they altered their tactics. Their zonal defence limited our attacking game.”

In the earlier women’s final, Chinese Taipei were no match for the hosts yet again.
Hong Kong had defeated the visitors 18-4 in Friday’s Group B encounter, and they were in control again early on.
Captain Tang Yi-ting scored three goals inside the opening seven minutes as they established a 7-1 lead.
The Taiwanese side got three goals back inside four second-quarter minutes to cut the deficit to 7-4, but that was as close as they got. Hong Kong pulled away in the second half, outscoring their opponents 6-2 to win it 14-6.
“We were playing them again, so a tighter match was not really a surprise,” said Gemini Fan Tak-kwan, the Hong Kong head coach. “The opponents understand our strengths better and had adjusted.
“We tried some new tactics too, and we knew we would be unlikely to keep them down for a whole hour-long match.
“We want our players to learn to respond to a drop in energy or focus, but I am happy with their overall performance throughout the tournament.”

The success was an improvement on Hong Kong’s narrow loss in the final four years ago, when they lost to Japanese side KEIO 9-8 in a nail-biter.
Having been rebuilding since last year’s World Championship, Hong Kong’s women will now start focusing on the 2026 global tournament.
“We will be building the team for the continental qualifiers,” Fan said. “We need to get our new players up to speed in terms of their standards and understanding.
“We are going to focus more on the basic skills and concepts initially, before working on the tactical front next year for the qualifiers.”
