This year’s Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards will finally return next month, albeit with a scaled-down ceremony at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Post has learned.

According to a source, the event which was originally expected to take place in February, and will honour the achievements of the city’s athletes from the past year, will now take place on August 31.

The yearly sporting “Oscars”, which have been held since 2000, have been interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic for the past two years. Last year’s ceremony, which took place in the West Kowloon Cultural District, restricted to winners only.

Hong Kong cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze won “Best of the Best” for her performances in 2019.

“It [August 31] is our tentative date, the format will be the same as last year, we will also cut the traditional dinner, only guests, athletes, and reporters are invited,” the source said.

“We will host it at the Convention and Exhibition Center again, but in a smaller hall. Last time, only winners were invited; this time, we will also welcome nominations.”

Because the city’s athletes had few or no opportunities to compete in 2020, the expectation is that all of the medallists from the Tokyo Olympics will win the top prizes on offer this time around.
