The 24-year-old eased past teammate Ryan Choi Chun-yin 15-4 in the Blue Cross Insurance 2021 Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships men’s foil final at the AsiaWorld Expo on Sunday evening.

But it was not all smooth sailing as he trailed fifth-seed Lawrence Ng Lok-wang twice in the semis, coming back from four points down to win 15-10 in front of a rapturous crowd. The 22-year-old Ng, a former TVB child actor, had a passionate support of his own who made sure they were heard every time Cheung lost a point.

“There was a bit [of pressure] at the start because it felt like I was playing with the whole audience,” Cheung said.

“My opponent is a bit younger and everyone was cheering for him. It felt like every time I lost a point they were helping him play. But I got used to it slowly. I learned to filter it out and not let it affect my performance and mood.
