Hong Kong’s mixed doubles duo Tang Chun-man and Tse Yng-suet held their nerve to hold off the threat of Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich to progress to the badminton quarter-finals and move a step closer to their dream of an Olympic medal.

The Hongkongers were comfortable at the very end – racking up six match points and needing just one of them to win their match 2-1 – but they were pushed all the way at the Musashino Forest Park Sports Plaza.

They were delighted and relieved to reach the last eight, where they will meet one of the four group winners.

“Reaching the quarters, I’m very happy. This is my third time at the Olympics – first win and first time in the quarters in Tokyo – so hard to forget, unbelievable,” said Tse, who also carried the flag for Hong Kong at the Opening Ceremony.

Tse said that the clutch win in the third game was a “major breakthrough” for the pair.
