‘May the best man win’ – Leung Chun-wing competes with at least five other Hong Kong cyclists for lone Tokyo Olympics spot
- Former world junior champion is focusing on road racing after track event door closed for Tokyo
- Coronavirus has hit road racing in Hong Kong with national championships cancelled because of strict social distancing requirements
It’s probably the most hotly contested spot in Hong Kong cycling and local ace Leung Chun-wing hopes the best man will win as he competes for the sole spot in men’s road race for next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.
Leung is competing against other Hong Kong riders for the honour to represent Hong Kong in Tokyo and he wants to give it a fair shake, requesting sufficient time for a “healthy competition” among his teammates.
At least five other riders are contending for the place – Leung, Cheung King-lok, Fung Ka-hoo, Ko Siu-wai, Leung Ka-yu and Burr Ho – after Hong Kong failed to enter a men’s rider in the track event.
Leung, Cheung and Leung Ka-yu were hoping to form the men’s madison team with 2020 Olympic Games the major target, but unfortunately they were shut out in the last qualifying event at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin early this year.
Leung, who represented Hong Kong in the omnium (one of the track disciplines) at the 2016 Rio Games, is now shifting his attention on the road race, hoping to grab another chance to shine at the Olympics.
