Hong Kong’s Tse Ying-suet said compatriot Lee Cheuk-yiu was a rising force in world badminton after the retirements of Lin Dan and Lee Chong-Wei.

At 36, mainlander Lin announced his retirement on Saturday after a glittering 20-year career including two Olympic crowns and five World Championships titles. Malaysian Lee, a three-time Olympic silver medallist, ended his career in 2019 because of nose cancer.

While Japan’s Kento Momota, the current world No 1, is expected to fill the gap left by the departure of the two superstars, Tse said the battle for men’s singles domination would be wide open.

“Other than Momota, players from Taiwan and Indonesia and Hong Kong’s Ng Ka-long can mount serious challenges,” said Tse, a silver medallist in the mixed doubles at the 2018 Asian Games. “But we cannot overlook another Hong Kong player, Lee Cheuk-yiu, who has a strong character and is always loved by the fans.

“He has got immense talent in badminton but also works very hard in his daily training. Of course, he needs to grasp the opportunity and prove he can come through the ranks to reach the top.”
