Lin Dan retirement: Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk-yiu can be a new force in men’s badminton, says teammate Tse Ying-suet
- The 23-year-old Lee Cheuk-yiu became the second home player to win the Hong Kong Open last year
- The Taiwan Open in September will be first tournament for Hong Kong shuttlers since the Covid-19 pandemic shut down world tour
Hong Kong’s Tse Ying-suet said compatriot Lee Cheuk-yiu was a rising force in world badminton after the retirements of Lin Dan and Lee Chong-Wei.
While Japan’s Kento Momota, the current world No 1, is expected to fill the gap left by the departure of the two superstars, Tse said the battle for men’s singles domination would be wide open.
“Other than Momota, players from Taiwan and Indonesia and Hong Kong’s Ng Ka-long can mount serious challenges,” said Tse, a silver medallist in the mixed doubles at the 2018 Asian Games. “But we cannot overlook another Hong Kong player, Lee Cheuk-yiu, who has a strong character and is always loved by the fans.
“He has got immense talent in badminton but also works very hard in his daily training. Of course, he needs to grasp the opportunity and prove he can come through the ranks to reach the top.”
