The 28-year-old seven-time Asian Games gold medallist was the city’s golden boy when he appeared alongside fellow Hangzhou native and Alibaba founder Jack Ma at a rousing closing ceremony for the 2018 Jakarta Games – when Indonesia handed over the baton to the capital of Zhejiang province.

While Sun remains a Hangzhou Asian Games ambassador, his position after the appeal in a Swiss court – the dates of which has yet to be confirmed – is unclear.

“They are waiting for the appeal,” said a source who has knowledge of the issue but declined to be named because of the sensitive nature of the situation.

“As a swimming athlete, Sun Yang belongs to the swimming federation and Chinese Olympic Committee. He is [still an] ambassador for the Hangzhou Asian Games.
