Hong Kong’s Ng On-yee may have lost the world No 1 ranking but she has made significant progress in developing the skills needed to challenge the men, says her coach Wayne Griffiths.

The 26-year-old Ng relinquished the women’s top ranking to main rival Reanne Evans, who held the No 1 spot for 11 years before the Hong Kong player took it off her twice.

Evans recovered from 2-0 down to beat Ng 4-3 in the 10-Red final before romping to victories in the 6-Red and pairs competition to deservedly return to the summit.

“By the incredibly high standards On-yee sets herself, this maybe seen as a relatively disappointing week. While we obviously realise that short-term results cannot be ignored, it is important that we focus on the significant progress we have seen in the key skills we have been working on,” said Griffiths.

“In the past 12 months, On-yee has worked very hard on her break-building consistency, decision making and frame management. These were seen as critical areas as she worked to stay ahead of the rest of the world in the ladies’ game and tried to close the gap with the men.
