Hong Kong's Hu Yun stunned reigning world champion Chen Long of China as the unseeded shuttler pulled off the biggest upset at the Singapore Open on Thursday.

It took three games before 33-year-old Hu wrapped up the match 12-21, 21-17, 21-18 after a gruelling 63 minutes against the pre-tournament favourite in the men's singles second round of the US$300,000 Superseries event.

"This is a massive win for Hu as his opponent is the world number one and the best current player," said head coach Tim He Yiming.

"Hu has been struggling to regain his best form when he reached the world's top four a couple of years ago and the victory should be able to bolster his confidence again."

Chen had been in tremendous form this year, lifting the prestigious All England Open title in early March, the first Superseries tournament of the year, followed by another victory in the Malaysia Open last week.
