Veteran Daryl Selby handed out a tough lesson to Max Lee Ho-yin on Tuesday, knocking out Hong Kong’s top-ranked player in the opening round of the US$220,000 Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open.

Lee earned the wrath of the referee on numerous occasions for not clearing the ball – making room for his opponent – resulting in a spate of penalties which added up to the 11-9, 11-9, 11-6 loss.

“He was pushing me a lot. I didn’t expect it to be so physical and it broke my concentration,” said a distraught Lee.

Even though he was up against an opponent, ranked 10th in the world and 15 places above him, Lee had hoped to pull off a momentous win in front of a partisan crowd at Hong Kong Squash Centre.

But the savvy Selby, who eight years ago had trained Lee when he was just starting out, had mapped out his plan of attack, which was to be as physical as possible on court.

“I knew he would be dangerous. Just last week he defeated Borja Golan who is ranked seventh in the world and I went out with the intention of making sure he knew I was there [on court],” Selby said.
