Making this week’s International Series Macau part of qualifying for the Open Championship in July was just the beginning of LIV Golf players being handed greater opportunities to play in the four majors, Sergio Garcia said on Wednesday.

While Garcia believed the R&A’s decision to put three spots up for grabs at Macau Golf and Country Club highlighted the growing strength of the Asian Tour, he also saw it as recognition that things within the game had to change.

With lifetime admission to the Masters after winning in 2017, and an invitation to this year’s PGA Championship, Garcia has two majors on his schedule, but a return to the Open, and its US counterpart, has been complicated by the lack of world ranking points for LIV events.

“We have the strongest league in the world, you see the quality of players we have in LIV and in our team,” Garcia, the Fireballs captain, said. “The majors want to have the best players possible competing in their events.

“They know what they’re doing, and they know they are missing a few of them because of the world rankings and everything that’s going on there.
