Trade talk and transfer rumours swirl, but this isn’t the Premier League, it’s LIV Golf shaking up the sport again
- The Saudi-backed league has done more to disrupt the sport over the past 18 months than anything that has come before it
- LIV is set to change the script yet again later this year, at least where team golf is concerned.
Talk of trades, transfers, players being dropped from squads or told they are surplus to requirements has long been part of the sporting landscape.
Entire industries are devoted to it, agents brief journalists with the hope of squeezing more money out of teams, and the media breathlessly reports even a hint that a star is being shipped out for future picks and a year’s supply of Pepsi (other cola brands are available).
In golf, any talk of team selection has largely been limited to every two years and the Ryder Cup; this year has been no different, albeit with the added friction surrounding LIV Golf.
The Saudi-backed league has done more to disrupt the sport over the past 18 months than anything that came before it, and it is going to change the script again later this year, at least where team golf is concerned.
Places are going to open up as players drop out or fail to regain their spots at the promotion’s events, officials could yet opt to add another team or two, and captains will see where they can strengthen or have to.
There will be at least one new face joining the league from the Asian Tour, with the winner of the International Series order of merit getting a spot. At the moment Andy Ogletree is top of the list, but the likes of Wade Ormsby, Kieran Vincent and Takumi Kanaya aren’t far behind.
