A fired up Phil Mickelson is ready to put the embarrassment of last year behind him, and believes he is in the kind of form that made him the game’s oldest major winner in 2021.
The 52-year-old plays his first tournament of the year at the PIF Saudi International this week, one of 19 in his schedule for 2023, and after an off-season of hard work is back to his college weight and in “the best shape I’ve been in for a long time”.
By his own high standards, Mickelson’s performances on the course last year were less than impressive, while some ill-advised comments off it regarding LIV Golf led to the loss of several major sponsors.
Now though, a strong off season has him feeling rejuvenated with a “whole new energy, whole different excitement” and ready to “do something special this year”.
“I really have some high expectations for the year and I feel like I have a unique opportunity to do some things that have never been done before in this game at this age,” Mickelson said.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play, compete and to get my game back because I love being in contention, I love having a chance to be in the thick of it.”
