In the end, Mexico’s Sergio Perez won a nail-biting race with Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen finishing third to stretch his F1 lead over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz held on to second for the second year in a row, with Leclerc an agonising fourth in his home race after starting on pole position.

“It’s a dream come true. It’s a massive day for myself and my country,” an elated Perez said. “You dream of winning this, and after your home race, there is no place more special to win.”

The start was originally scheduled for 3pm local time, but the formation lap was delayed by more than an hour as the rain-soaked circuit was deemed unsafe.

A second red flag was waived after Mick Schumacher’s dramatic crash sliced his Haas car in half. He escaped unharmed.
