Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White told new England boss Thomas Tuchel he deserved to be included in the German’s first squad in charge after only being drafted in at late notice.
The omission of the Forest captain from Tuchel’s squad on Friday was a surprise given his role in firing Nuno Espirito Santo’s men to third in the English Premier League.
However, the 25-year-old was handed a reprieve on Sunday when an injury to Cole Palmer saw Gibbs-White called up.
“Obviously I was upset. Yeah, a little bit disappointed,” Gibbs-White told the BBC.
“I said to him back like ‘I feel like I’ve done enough to get the call-up, considering the form level that we were in, but obviously you’re the manager, you make the decisions, and I respect that totally’.

“So, obviously, it was disappointing but then Sunday I got the call, so I was straight here.”
Gibbs-White made his first two appearances for the Three Lions under caretaker manager Lee Carsley.
Advantage Madrid
Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Uefa Women’s Champions League quarter-final at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano.
Goals in either half from Linda Caicedo and Athenea del Castillo gave the hosts the advantage over the 2007 winners.
The match is effectively part of a double header between the sides with the same match up set at the same stage in the men’s competition.

Unlike the men, Real Madrid Femenino were only formed in 2014 and it’s Clasico rivals Barcelona who have dominated the women’s scene in recent years.
Meanwhile, eight-time winners and runners-up last season, Lyon, won 2-0 at Bayern Munich to take a big step towards the semi-finals.
Battling through
Four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka rallied to beat Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Miami Open.
The Japanese star captured her first match win since she reached the third round of the Australian Open – where she retired with an abdominal injury while trailing Belinda Bencic.
Osaka bounced back from a first-round loss to Camila Osorio at Indian Wells, a match she called the “worst match I’ve ever played in my life”.

She said Tuesday she had learned from that disappointing performance.
“[In Indian Wells] I was just overhitting a lot, so I tried to use my legs,” she said in her on-court interview. “I was going to run into every corner if I had to, and we were going to have to play for three hours if she was going to beat me.”
In fact, Osaka polished off the victory in two hours and 28 minutes, battling back after dropping the first five games.
Starodubtseva led 4-2 in the second set, but Osaka’s 10 aces helped her recover and she was in control in the third set to launch her bid for a first title in the city she considers her United States home. She was runner-up to Iga Swiatek in 2022 in her best Miami Open finish.
Osaka next faces 24th seed Liudmila Samsonova.

The United States will host England in July as the culmination of a series of high-profile men’s and women’s fixtures that form part of the country’s plan to boost rugby’s profile ahead of hosting two World Cups in the next decade.
USA Rugby announced six fixtures, including a July 19 double header at Audi Field in Washington where the men will face England and the women will play Fiji.
The match will conclude England’s summer tour, which begins with a non-cap fixture against a France XV at Twickenham on June 21, followed by two tests in Argentina, when coach Steve Borthwick will be without players involved in the British and Irish Lions series in Australia.
The US men’s team will play two warm-up games in Charlotte, North Carolina, taking on the Netherlands on July 5 and Spain a week later. The women’s team will play Japan on April 26 in Los Angeles and Canada in Kansas City on July 5.
The US is hosting the men’s World Cup in 2031 and the women’s in 2033.
“The US is a rapidly growing rugby market. This test series strengthens the competition calendar and fuels rugby’s expansion,” USA Rugby CEO Bill Goren said.
