If winning is the point of all competitive sport, and surely it has to be, then England need to rethink their approach to international cricket at some point.
Another loss to Australia was perhaps the perfect example of the limits of Bazball – or maybe coach Brendon McCullum is just Kevin Keegan (the 1990s Newcastle United manager version) incarnate. Entertaining, but ultimately self-defeating.
Still, Arsenal could have done with a little of Keegan’s joie de vivre in Bergamo, and if men chasing a ball is your thing, then there was a third night of Champions League action too. So, here’s what happened while you were sleeping.
Cat-like reflexes
David Raya’s goalkeeping heroics ensured Arsenal escaped from Atalanta with a point in their opening Champions League game, and fans could be forgiven for now viewing Sunday’s clash with Manchester City with trepidation rather than expectation.

And the Premier League side would probably have lost had Raya not pulled off an astonishing double save in the 51st minute to stop Mateo Retegui from netting first from the penalty spot and then on the rebound.
Manager Mikel Arteta called it “two of the best saves I’ve ever seen in my career”, while Atalanta boss called the Spanish goalkeeper “a cat. The first save is good but the rebound is unbelievable”.
An uphill battle
Barcelona spent 80 minutes down to 10 men, and Eric Garcia’s sending off ultimately cost them in a surprise 2-1 defeat at Monaco.
Hansi Flick’s side have started the season with a perfect record after five La Liga matches, but struggled to find their best level against the Ligue 1 side, and went behind to a Maghnes Akliouche strike soon after the dismissal.
Starlet Lamine Yamal grabbed a fine equaliser before half-time, becoming the second youngest scorer in the competition at 17 years and 68 days old, but 18-year-old George Ilenikhena, grabbed the winner for Monaco in the 71st minute.
“The game changed completely [with the red card],” Flick, the Barcelona manager, said. “We had a few chances, but they deserved to win.”

Asked about the latest Bazball collapse and resulting seven-wicket loss to Australia in the first one-day game at Trent Bridge, England captain Harry Brook said he was “not too fussed about it”.
Cruising to a huge total at 201 for two with 20 overs of their 50 remaining, the home side collapsed to 315 all out, losing their last six wickets for 59 runs as they attempted to hit the cover off the ball. Travis Head, in contrast, made a career best 154 as Australia reached 317-3 and won with six overs to spare.
“We are out there to score runs. If you get caught somewhere on the boundary or in the field then who cares? We want to entertain,” Brook said, perhaps missing the point that Australia’s fans were probably highly entertained by another win over England.
McIlroy loses his head
Rory McIlroy lost the club head on his 9-iron and then lost a chance to take the first-round lead by going out of bounds on the last hole in an eventful five-under-par 67 at the BMW PGA Championship on Thursday.
McIlroy had already produced a rare backhanded putt next to a water hazard to help salvage a par at No 8 by the time he overcame a bizarre incident on the par-5 12th, which saw the head of his 9-iron detach from the shaft and fly down the fairway after McIlroy took his second shot.

Matthew Baldwin carded a 65, which included a birdie at the last to complete a bogey-free round, while Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard, and Thomas Detry finished on six-under to end the first round at Wentworth in a tie for second.
