Hong Kong football boss Jorn Andersen skips World Cup camp as resignation rumours fly, Chinese Super League switch mooted
- Speculation surrounding the future of head coach Jorn Andersen grows after he misses training ahead of Iran game
- Officials have refused to comment, but 61-year-old could be in line for role with CSL strugglers Henan FC
Hong Kong head coach Jorn Andersen failed to show up for a training session on Tuesday, further fuelling speculation that he has resigned.
Assistant coach Wolfgang Luisser, who oversaw the first of a four-day camp alongside fitness coach Mathew Pears, said the Norwegian would not be at the team’s Tseung Kwan O training headquarters.
A skeleton squad gathered for training behind closed doors, with none of the players based in mainland China – Oliver Gerbig, Yue Tze-nam, Matt Orr, and Jacky Leung Nok-hang – involved.
Players from Eastern, meanwhile, trained with their club at the same complex, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Sham Shui Po.
Speculation over Andersen’s shock resignation emerged late on Monday, after reports the 61-year-old had quit less than two weeks before his side’s World Cup qualifier against Iran.
On Tuesday, members of Andersen’s back-room staff said they had not been told anything about the coach’s future, while a spokesman for the Football Association of Hong Kong, China, confirmed the organisation would hold a press conference on Wednesday.
