How to watch the Bundesliga in Hong Kong – channel and times for football’s return

  • German top flight will be screened live in city as world awaits return of first of Europe’s ‘Big Five’ football leagues
  • Derby rivals Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 kick-off this weekend’s action before leaders Bayern Munich play on Sunday

The global sporting calendar has been on pause during the coronavirus pandemic but there are signs of a comeback, especially in football

South Korea’s K-League returned last week to follow Belarus, Burundi, Nicaragua, Tajikistan and the Taiwan Premier League in giving football fans live matches.
Now the first of Europe’s “Big Five” leagues is set to make its comeback, with the German Bundesliga expected to kick off this weekend amid coronavirus control measures.
The English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga are not set to restart until at least June, while France has already called this season off and declared Paris Saint-Germain the 2020 champions.

The German top flight is sure to be the most watched of all those leagues that have carried on with live matches, even without the country’s famously passionate fans in attendance at these behind closed doors games.

With a combination of world class players alongside some of the biggest clubs in European football, the Bundesliga is an easy sell. That is without mentioning how tight the title race is – with just six points separating the top four – and a relegation battle at the other end.

Add in the established English-language social media and commentary in place for the Bundesliga is set for a boost given the absence of other top European action for the time being – and to the possible cost of those other leagues already in action.

So the big question is where can you watch it?

In Hong Kong, that is nice and simple. Fox Sports has the rights and will broadcast across the region and they will broadcast the weekend’s big match on Saturday evening.

Second placed Borussia Dortmund take on local rivals Schalke 04 in a game known as the “Revierderby”. The action kicks off at 9.30pm on Saturday night (Fox Sports 2, NowTV channel 671) before the late game between Frankfurt and fourth-place Borussia Monchengladbach (same channel, 12.30am kick-off).

Dortmund, led by Jadon Sancho and Erling Braut Haaland, need to win as they look to cut down Bayern Munich’s four-point lead at the top (and ward off RB Leipzig a point behind them in third).

Sunday sees Cologne take on Mainz on the same channel at 9.30pm followed by Union Berlin hosting leaders Bayern Munich at 12am.

German football fans warned to stay away ahead of Bundesliga restart

Football hipsters might also like to know that the second tier Bundesliga 2 is also shown in Hong Kong through the on.cc app (and Facebook page).

Also, Sports 2 World shows a Bundesliga highlights show and has some matches in full via its app and as part of TVB’s MyTV Super OOT package (channels 306 and 307).
