Manchester United’s 1999 Uefa Champions League final hero, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is the favourite to replace Jose Mourinho on an interim basis.
The former Norway striker is in charge of Molde in his homeland, but the Norwegian season does not resume until March.
However, there has been no precedent of a manager taking leave of absence to manage another team.
Solskjaer has made no secret of his desire to return to Old Trafford as manager one day.
The 45-year-old told the Scandinavian branch of the Manchester United supporters club that it was his “dream” in an interview last year.
Jose Mourinho linked to Chinese Super League for next job along with Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Portugal national team 
Once he retired from playing in 2007 he took charge of the Manchester United reserve team before moving on to Molde, Cardiff City and back to Molde.
The club made it clear that they would be looking to hire an interim manager from outside of the club, ruling out Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, who were set to take training until a caretaker was found.
Other former players have been linked with the vacancy.
Laurent Blanc, who played for United for three years at the tail end of his career, has been mentioned and the Frenchman is out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2016.
Wales manager Ryan Giggs, who took charge as United caretaker following the dismissal of David Moyes, has also been put in the frame.

Another member of the Class of ‘92, Paul Scholes, has also been linked by the bookmakers along with his former captain Roy Keane and former United assistant Carlos Queiroz
Alex Ferguson, who has recovered from a health scare, has also been included, although this would have echoes of Matt Busby once United had sacked Wilf McGuinness, Busby’s replacement. United were relegated to the second tier just six seasons after Busby lifted the European Cup in 1968.
Paul Ince told the BBC that his former Manchester United teammates Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes should be considered for the caretaker role.
Solskjaer leads the way, though, particularly after Manchester United announced the news on their official website before swiftly removing the video.

It was captioned “Solskjaer becomes our interim manager, 20 years seasons after clinching the Treble with THAT goal at Camp Nou.”
Norway’s prime minister also congratulated the former striker before deleting the tweet. Erna Solberg had called it a “Great day for Norwegian football” and wished him luck.
The odds have since shortened on Solskjaer becoming the next permanent manager when the club makes their appointment next summer.
In the meantime, if Solksjaer does take charge as expected then he will face former club Cardiff City on Saturday.
Reports suggest his appointment could be confirmed as early as Wednesday morning in the UK.
