Su Bingtian, China’s star sprinter, is to miss the Paris Olympics.

The news was confirmed by Su on Thursday as he told Chinese media that he would not be competing and wished his compatriots well.

Su, 34, became the first Chinese runner to qualify for a men’s 100 metres Olympic final at the Tokyo Games in 2021. He finished sixth in that final, having recorded an Asian record of 9.83 seconds in the semi-final.

But he skipped last year’s Asian Games, citing “accumulated injuries” and saying he was making the move in an attempt to “prolong my career”.

“I want to [tell] the Chinese relay quartet that, although I could not stand by you on the track, I am sending you my best wishes and power,” Su was quoted as saying by Chinese media, without giving details about his fitness.
