The city’s women’s team secured a semi-final spot at the Hong Kong Lacrosse Open after dispatching Singapore club CrossFire 20-3 at the Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Centre in Tseung Kwan O on Saturday.
Hong Kong built a solid 10-0 lead in the opening quarter before cruising past the visitors for their third win in as many games to top Group B.
Despite outscoring their opponents 59-8 in the group stage, Gemini Fan Tak-kwan, head coach of the women’s national team, is expecting “much tougher” games when the knockout stages begin on Sunday.
“We just came back from training and competition in Okinawa,” Fan said. “We had some adjustments after the trip and I am glad to see the players were able to play to their level in the past few games.
“The opponents will be much stronger in the semi-finals so hopefully we can still perform what we have practised then.”

Hong Kong are likely to face Infinity – a local team made up of former Hong Kong team members – or J-connection from Japan in the semi-finals.
Another home side – the Hong Kong High Performance Program Team (HKHPP) – still has an outside chance to make it out of the group stage.
“With the 8-8 draw between Infinity and J-connection earlier, Group A is a bit complicated now,” Fan said.
“Infinity will be a more special opponent given the team’s background because we know each other really well playing in the local league, while J-connection is a very strong team from Japan. They are the strongest nation in Asia, and so it is going to be an interesting match-up either way.”

The 38-year-old Fan, who also takes charge of HKU20, added that the tournament has been a great experience for the team, as Hong Kong are set to host the World Women’s U20 Championship in 2024.
“This is a very good tournament for the players because they can familiarise themselves playing against other teams,” said Fan, who retired after captaining the city’s representative team at the 2017 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.
“There are always things you cannot learn in regular training but only through the actual games. This is also a chance for the coaches to practice our game management skills.”
In the men’s competition, Hong Kong maintained their perfect record with a pair of wins over Singapore and Japanese side FOGO to secure a place in Monday’s final.
Hong Kong, who finished as runners-up in the 2019 edition, thrashed Singapore 20-1 earlier in the day before edging out reigning champions FOGO 8-4 in a repeat of the final four years ago.

“We managed to stick to our game plan and play to our standard,” captain Kelvin Mak Ho-chun said. “We expect to play FOGO again in the final so there will be a psychological advantage, but the final is another game.”
The hosts raced into an early 3-0 lead in the opening quarter before the visitors crawled back to pull within a goal, trailing 4-3 in the third quarter. But a pair of goals by Hong Kong inside a minute helped set the tone for rest of the game.
“Geoff Ling’s goal at 4-3 was vital as it lifted the morale of the team during a critical moment – his goal snapped FOGO’s momentum,” Mak added.
HKHPP, who lost 11-0 to Hong Kong in the tournament’s curtain-raiser on Friday, had since won three games on the trot.
The city’s young guns defeated China and Singapore club CrossFire 9-1 and 11-2 respectively on Saturday to go level on points with FOGO.
The two teams will go head-to-head in the final group game on Sunday, with the Hongkongers needing a win to advance to the final.
