China set for new Tokyo Olympics bronze after Britain stripped of 4x100m silver over CJ Ujah’s doping violation
- British sprinter CJ Ujah apologises to his teammates after testing positive for banned substances ostarine and S-23
- China’s medal tally from Tokyo would improve to 89 in total; 38 gold, 32 silver and 19 bronze
China’s 4x100 metres relay athletics team are expected to be promoted to the bronze medal for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after Great Britain were stripped of the silver on Friday.
British sprinter CJ Ujah tested positive for the prohibited substances ostarine and S-23, commonly used to build muscle, after the race on August 6, 2021. The British team finished second behind gold medallists Italy in Japan by one hundredth of a second.
As a result of their disqualification, Canada are expected to be awarded silver, with China promoted to the bronze-medal position. It would take China’s Tokyo medal haul to 89 medals – 38 gold, 32 silver and 19 bronze, while Britain, which finished fourth in the overall table behind United States, China and Japan, drop to 64 medals (22 gold, 21 silver and 21 bronze).
The bronze would also be China’s sixth track and field medal from Tokyo, to go with two gold, two silver and another bronze.
A statement from the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s anti-doping division said Ujah was “found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation”.
