The China National Games are well under way despite only officially starting later this month and Chinese Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medal winning trampolinist Zhu Xueying saw her dreams of a double end in spectacular fashion.
Zhu, who rose to global fame after complaining that her Tokyo 2020 gold medal was “peeling” in a post on her Weibo while in quarantine, crashed out of the competition in Xi’an, Shaanxi province on Saturday’s opening day of the trampoline events.
The Olympic gold medallist made an error during the second preliminary round with a member of the coaching staff attempting to throw a mat under Zhu as she came back down off the trampoline.
Zhu, who won silver in the individual event at the last National Games competing for her native Tianjin province, was also assisted by a referee. She was reported to be uninjured.
The 23-year-old had successfully completed her opening jump for a score of 47.005 points but her mistake on her second jump meant she was scored down and was given 33.835 points.
