China’s team of Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi beat the World Championship gold-medallist German pairing of Lea Friedrich and Emma Hinze in the final by just five hundredths of a second to secure China’s second track cycling Olympic medal.

The ROC took the bronze medal edging Netherlands into fourth place.

The Chinese pair beat Lithuania by over a second in the qualifying heat as they set a new world mark at 31.804 seconds, beating their own record set at the Rio Games in 2016.

An untidy changeover from the Chinese allowed the Germans back into the final at the death. A photo-finish was called as the Europeans clawed their way back, but China just held on for the gold.
