Chinese swim fans react to Sun Yang rival Mack Horton’s comments and Swimming Australia’s decision to ‘cover up’ Shayna Jack’s failed dope test
- Sun takes parting shot at ‘haters’ as he leaves South Korea claiming to be a champion for athletes’ rights
- Swimming chief says two more athletes are under investigation for alleged doping
The swimming world has been rocked with the news that Australia’s Shayna Jack tested positive for banned substances ahead of this month’s world swimming championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
Jack tested positive and was pulled from the Australia squad for the worlds but the news was not released until the competition was nearly finished. At the time it was announced she would not compete because of “personal reasons”.
The decision by Swimming Australia to keep it quiet has led the Australian press to call the country a global laughing stock. Swimming Australia had claimed that they were legally bound to keep the Jack findings confidential until the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (Asada) had ruled on it. However, former Asada boss Richard Ings said this is not the case.
It’s certainly been the case among Chinese social media users, who have been quick to comment in light of Australian Mack Horton’s very public spat with China’s Sun Yang over the course of the championships in South Korea.
Horton refused to take the podium with Sun as the Chinese swimmer awaits a September hearing at the Court of Abitration for Sport over destroying samples of his blood at an in-home test last year.
