Great Britain’s Tom Daley and Matty Lee took gold in the men’s synchronised 10m platform event to end China’s diving Dream Team’s hopes of a clean sweep at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday.
The Britons finished with a total score of 471.81 points, edging out China’s two-time gold medallists Chen Aisen and Cao Yuan by just 1.23 points.

The Russian pair of Aleksandr Bondar and Viktor Minibaev took bronze with 439.92.
“I’m just so proud of you for holding that together,” Daley, 27, told Lee in an interview with the BBC. “I felt I was going to crumble at so many points in the competition.

“But everything has fallen into place. Matt was in the zone. Today we didn’t say much to each other, we just knew what we had to do.”
This was a first career gold medal for Daley and 23-year-old Lee, who was making his Olympics debut. Four-time Olympian Daley won bronze in the same event at the Rio 2016 Games, and an individual bronze at London 2012.

“All year I’ve been thinking about the gold and trying not to think about it,” Lee said. “You’ve got to think about the process. To be able to share my first Olympics with Tom, and to get a gold medal, it’s unbelievable.”
Having won seven of eight diving events at the Rio 2016 Olympics, China had high hopes of going one better in Tokyo.
And they made the perfect start, with Shi Tingmao and Wang Han taking gold in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard final on Sunday.



Chen and Cao were the heavy favourites at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, and looked good for a third Games title, leading through the first three rounds.
But a disappointing fourth dive out of six opened the door for the British pair to take the lead 281.04 points to China’s 275.82.

The Chinese pair recovered on their fifth dive, however, to close the gap to less than two points, ensuring the event went to the wire.
Daley and Lee then put in a phenomenal final effort, earning one perfect 10 from the judges, with every other score a 9.0 or 9.5.
Cao and Chen had a strong final dive themselves, but the British contingent in the stands erupted when China’s marks went up, and Lee and Daley shared an emotional embrace.
