Singapore’s top diplomat Vivian Balakrishnan has denied “liking” a Facebook post by a former nominated member of parliament (NMP) who suggested relocating pro-Palestine activists to Gaza.
The press secretary for the foreign affairs minister later on Wednesday told local media that Balakrishnan had filed a report with Meta over “unauthorised activity” on his account.
Just past midnight on Tuesday, Balakrishnan said on Facebook he did not share the views of former NMP Calvin Cheng, and had since taken measures to enhance the security of his account.
Cheng said in a Facebook post on March 13 that he would sponsor moving members of local activist group Monday of Palestine Solidarity to Gaza “only if they never come back”.
His controversial remarks drew criticism, with an opposition politician filing a police report against him.
Cheng was responding to pro-Palestinian activists disrupting various meet-the-people sessions, which are weekly talks across Singapore during which residents can seek help from their elected parliament representative.
Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam posted a video of his interaction with two activists last month at a session, in which they were seen making rude gestures and calling him a coward.
While Monday of Palestine Solidarity denied that the visit to Shanmugam’s session was initiated by it, the ruling People’s Action Party named the group when answering queries from local media.
Last Thursday, the group pointed out on its Instagram page that Balakrishnan and Senior Minister of State for National Development and Digital Development and Information Tan Kiat How had liked Cheng’s post but later removed their “likes”. It shared screenshots of Tan saying he had accidentally liked the post and since reversed the action.


Balakrishnan had not responded to the group’s allegation until Wednesday, saying in his post: “I did not ‘like’ the post by Calvin Cheng on 13 March 2025. I do not share those views. I have since taken measures to enhance account security.”
The explanation garnered more than 1,300 reactions and 600 comments by Wednesday afternoon with some thanking the minister for the clarification and asking him to look into Cheng’s Facebook posts for “spreading much hatred”.
Others, however, expressed scepticism. One user wrote: “Kindly enlighten us what’s the measure to enhance account security in order not to ‘Like’ a post accidentally?”

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Singapore have been banned to maintain religious harmony, with the government taking an educational approach to explain to citizens its stance on the matter.
Balakrishnan has repeatedly stated Singapore’s position that supports the right of the Palestinian people to a homeland of their own. Last November, he said Singapore had conveyed to the Israeli government at the highest level that its military response had gone too far.
The minister also told parliament in February that the only way to achieve a durable solution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a negotiated two-state solution. “This principled position is consistent with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”
Since the start of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023, Singapore has conveyed six tranches of humanitarian help to the besieged Palestinian enclave, accounting for more than S$19 million (US$14.1 million), according to Balakrishnan.
