The artificial intelligence boom has swept through consumer electronics – from smart wearables and AI-powered home devices to voice-interactive toys and robotic pets – but its most significant impact may be on the interface itself.
Technology is moving off the screen and onto the face, with smart glasses increasingly seen as the next frontier.
“The next interaction revolution will happen right in front of our eyes – driven by AI agents and the inevitable miniaturisation of hardware,” said Wu Fei, founder and CEO of Beijing-based augmented reality (AR) glasses maker LLVision.
Wu traces his thinking back to around 2010, when Apple’s roll-out of the iPhone left him both awed and unsettled – a device that redefined interaction through touch and swipe and began shifting daily life into software.
Reflecting on what might follow prompted him to launch his own company in 2014.
“The essence of interaction is to serve people,” Wu said. “The next generation of devices must align more closely with human cognitive instincts.”

He was among the early developers riding the first wave of enthusiasm over AR and virtual reality (VR). In 2014, Google pushed Google Glass into the consumer market, only to encounter a swift backlash over privacy concerns that stalled adoption.
LLVision started cautiously, focusing first on enterprise scenarios where demand was clearer. The company developed tools for remote collaboration, factory equipment inspections and construction site mapping.
Over time, those services evolved into standardised software systems that clients could deploy at scale.
To date, LLVision has shipped around 100,000 business-focused units and generates tens of millions of yuan in annual revenue, according to Wu without specifying exact figures.
Since 2020, it has also targeted accessibility. The firm developed glasses for people with hearing impairments that display real-time transcriptions of speech, converting spoken words into text.
Around 30,000 users currently rely on the product, which Wu describes as designed to “eliminate communication barriers”.
Building on that foundation, LLVision launched its Leion Hey2 smart eyewear in the second half of 2025. The binocular waveguide model, equipped with a single green display, focuses on real-time translation and is powered by increasingly capable large language models.
Weighing 49 grams, it is optimised for multilingual conversation, speaker identification and more precise sound-source detection.
Even so, Wu acknowledges that current smart glasses fall short of his longer-term vision, which centres on AI agents capable of operating proactively.
“The future is about proactive AI – systems that see what you see and think what you think,” he said, arguing that glasses could become a key terminal in such an ecosystem.
In his view, the mobile internet era was defined by apps competing for users’ time. In the AI era, agents will compete for users’ trust, helping complete tasks and improve efficiency.
The benchmark for intelligent devices may therefore shift from screen size and battery life to how much AI computation – measured in units known as tokens – they can handle.
That shift is beginning to take shape as global technology groups and start-ups alike accelerate their push into smart eyewear.

Facebook owner Meta Platforms has been among the most aggressive in moving the category towards the mass market, collaborating with EssilorLuxottica’s Ray-Ban and Oakley brands.
The French-Italian eyewear maker said on a recent earnings call that 7 million smart glasses were sold in 2025. Meta’s Ray-Ban Display – featuring a right-eye in-lens full-colour display – debuted in September.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said it was “hard to imagine a world in several years where most glasses that people wear aren’t AI glasses”.
Google and Apple are also reportedly developing a line of AI-powered eyewear.
In China, the country’s deep electronics supply chain and mature software ecosystem have drawn a wide range of players into the field – from internet giants such as Alibaba Group Holding, Baidu and ByteDance to hardware manufacturers including Xiaomi, Huawei Technologies and TCL’s RayNeo, alongside start-ups such as Rokid, Xreal, Viture and Even Realities.

China’s smart-glasses market, which includes extended reality and audio-video devices, was expected to ship 4.5 million units in 2026, up 77.7 per cent year on year, according to research firm IDC.
As optical engines, chips, lenses and frame materials continue to improve, smart eyewear is becoming lighter, more specialised and more personalised. Wu predicts that truly everyday AI glasses – as lightweight as conventional eyewear – could arrive around 2027.
The category, meanwhile, appears to be entering a more serious phase.
Whether the industry can overcome the technical limitations, privacy concerns and behavioural hurdles that hindered earlier attempts may determine whether smart glasses finally move from niche experiment to mainstream device.
