Liu Guoliang resigned as president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) on Wednesday, saying he was stepping down to leave his replacement enough time to guide the nation’s preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Less than nine months after China swept the table tennis gold medals in Paris, the 49-year-old handed the baton to his vice-president Wang Liqin, a two-time Olympic champion who had climbed the ladder as a sports official in Shanghai since his retirement from playing in 2014.
There was a nod to the future, too, as six-time Olympic champion Ma Long was elected a vice-president of the CTTA at the congress on Wednesday.
Liu cited a smooth transition for the association and an intention to spend more time with his family as reasons for stepping down.
“I resigned at the right time to leave the new CTTA leadership a full cycle of preparations for the Los Angeles Olympic Games,” Liu said. “Now I am considering spending more time with my family.”

One of 11 players to have completed a grand slam – having won singles titles at the Olympics, World Championships and World Cup – Liu became head coach of China’s men’s national team at 27 in 2003. He subsequently became chief coach of China’s table tennis teams in 2013, and took the helm of the CTTA in 2018.
As a coach, he guided Chinese players to win nine of a possible 10 gold medals at the Olympics. The team missed just one title from 10 finals while he was CTTA president.
He is also a vice-president of the International Table Tennis Federation and chairman of the World Table Tennis Council.
“Honestly, I am a bit sad to leave, but also a bit excited about future,” Liu said. “My love for table tennis will never change.”
Ma hailed Liu as a “great mind” and “visionary”, thanking his mentor for making him who he is, adding that “every step of my success is connected with him”.
Newly crowned World Cup winner Sun Yingsha took to Weibo to express her gratitude to Liu, whom she credited with helping her “realise my dream of fighting for my country”.
“I also believe that under the leadership of Wang Liqin, the national table tennis team will continue to be invincible in the new Olympic cycle, moving from victory to new victory,” she wrote on the social media platform.
A proud defender of the traditional Chinese hitting style, Liu shot to fame in 1992 when he upset Sweden legend Jan-Ove Waldner at just 16, and proved playing table tennis with a penhold grip was not a dying art.
Liu rejuvenated what had been branded as outdated as the wooden tennis racquet, the scissor-style high jump and bowling underarm in cricket.
He quit two days after the CTTA named the country’s squad for next month’s ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Qatar from May 17 to 25.

Wang Chuqin, Lin Shidong, Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu led a star-studded cast that also included the likes of Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan and Xue Fei in the men’s team.
On the women’s side, Sun, Wang Manyu, Wang Yidi, Chen Xingtong and Shi Xunyao will head to the singles event, with Chen Xingtong and Qian Tianyi, and Wang Manyu and Kuai Man competing in the doubles.
For the mixed doubles, Olympic champions Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha will again team up, while and Asian Championships winners Lin Shidong and Kuai Man are also in the mix.
The CTTA added that with automatic qualification for the table tennis worlds, Olympic champions Ma, Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng would not take part.
