A mainland student studying in England who shared free traditional Chinese snacks with strangers in the street to spread the joy of eating them, has trended on social media.
The woman, surnamed Wang, 24, from Chongqing municipality in southwestern China’s Sichuan province, is pursuing a master’s degree in Early Childhood Development at University College London.
Her childhood memories of eating the traditional snacks were so happy she wanted to pass on some of that positivity to people in her temporarily adopted home.
On February 20, Chongqing Television Station reported that Wang was sharing her delicious sugar-coated haws, which she made herself, with passers-by in the English capital.

Known as tang hulu in Mandarin, haws are rock sugar candied fruit on bamboo sticks, strung together and inserted in a gourd.
The traditional snack, that originates from the Song dynasty (960 - 1279), is particularly popular in northern China. The price of a string of the sugar-coated haws starts at 5 yuan (70 US cents)
In a viral video, Wang is dressed in a traditional hanfu outfit, carrying a cluster of the sweet treats and handing them out to people.
“What is this?” one woman asks Wang.
“Tang hulu, it’s a traditional Chinese snack,” she answers.
The woman reaches out her hand to take one and thanks her in Mandarin.
Next, a little English girl walks past with her father and asks Wang if she has tang hulu, to which Wang replies.
“You can pick one. This is strawberry and this is hawthorn.”
“I watch Chinese dramas on television, and I really wanted to try tang hulu,” the little girl tells her.
The motivation behind Wang’s gift idea is the belief that sharing Chinese food would be a good way to introduce the culture of her homeland overseas.
“Everyone enjoys it, and everyone is happy,” Wang said, adding that some people asked her for the recipe.
Wang said she intends to share other traditional food from China while she is living in the UK.

Wang’s story has won praise on mainland social media.
“This idea is brilliant. Well done,” one person said.
“Ha ha, will she share Sichuan hotpot next time?” asked another.
