China supports Iran holding nuclear talks with the United States, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his visiting Iranian counterpart on Wednesday, as the two top diplomats chastised America for its foreign policy.
During their meeting in Beijing, Wang and Abbas Araghchi criticised the US for its “abuse of tariffs” and “bullying” conduct, according to a read-out from the Chinese foreign ministry.
“China has always been committed to a political and diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue and is opposed to resorting to force and illegal unilateral sanctions at every turn,” Wang said.
Araghchi came to Beijing at Wang’s invitation and ahead of a third round of nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington due to take place in Oman on Saturday.
The senior ministers were said to have held an “in-depth exchange of views” on the latest developments on Iran’s nuclear situation.


Wang said China appreciated Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, respected the country’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and supported its dialogue with all parties, including the US.
The foreign minister added that Beijing backed Tehran’s safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests through consultation and negotiation in the interest of international nuclear non-proliferation as well as regional peace and stability.
Meanwhile, Araghchi voiced gratitude for China’s role in promoting a political and diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue, according to the read-out, and promised to keep in close communication and coordination with Beijing.
Amid China’s stand-off with the US in an escalating tariff war, Wang described China and Iran as “in the same boat helping each other”.
“The world today is in chaos,” the veteran diplomat said. “The United States, who is abusing tariffs, has lost the hearts and minds of the people and isolated itself from the international community.”
China and Iran were working in solidarity “against unilateralism and bullying”, Wang added.
Araghchi said the countries’ ties were based on mutual trust and that Iran backed China in defending its core interests, the read-out stated.
“In the face of the United States’ abuse of tariffs and bullying, Iran will continue to firmly support China, jointly oppose unilateralism and hegemonism and together safeguard multilateralism,” Araghchi said.
“The friendship between the two countries has a solid foundation and will not be affected by other factors.”
The foreign ministers agreed to strengthen communication and coordination in multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the United Nations and Brics, an association of leading emerging economies.
They also discussed regional issues, including the Israel-Gaza conflict, Syria, Yemen and developments in the Red Sea, the read-out said.
Earlier in the day, Araghchi briefed Chinese vice-premier Ding Xuexiang on the progress of indirect Iran-US talks. He said that Iran, despite bitter past experience, had embarked on the path of diplomacy “with goodwill and seriousness”, according to a read-out by Iran’s foreign ministry.
Tehran this month began engaging indirectly with Washington over its nuclear programme. Oman mediated the highest-level meeting between the two nations since 2018 when US President Donald Trump withdrew the country from a previously signed deal.
According to the read-out, Araghchi deemed closer interaction among like-minded countries, such as Iran and China, necessary to counter bullying and unilateralism, while reiterating Iran’s resolve to enhance all-round relations with China.


Iranian media said he told Ding that China and Russia had been “strategic partners and close friends who have supported Tehran in difficult times”, and that Iran would maintain close consultation with China.
Ding told Araghchi that China stood ready to strengthen collaboration in international and regional affairs.
Last week, Tehran held consultation talks with the Kremlin, when Araghchi met his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow.
A trilateral consultation on Iran’s nuclear programme was held in Beijing in March, when the senior officials of the three countries had “in-depth discussions on the latest state of play with regard to the nuclear issue and sanctions lifting”, according to a read-out from the Chinese side at the time.
