Could you be best friends with your ex’s ex? Hollywood is no stranger to the bitter break-ups and drama of celebrities, but there are some relationships that come out better than expected. That’s certainly the case with Lenny Kravitz and Jason Momoa, who definitely didn’t let typical relationship norms and labels define them.

In late March, American rock legend Lenny, 57, posted a photograph of himself and DC star Momoa, 42, on Instagram showing off their bromance and shared love of motorcycles. Kravitz captioned the post with “Ride or die. Brothers for life,” and the Aquaman star responded with “Love u bro. Ohana for life” with heart emojis.

The post garnered attention from fans worldwide as well as from Lenny’s daughter and Momoa’s stepdaughter Zoë Kravitz, who also commented, “Well isn’t this just adorable. Love you both so much.”

For those who are not aware, Lenny was married The Cosby Show star Lisa Bonet, with whom he shares daughter Zoë, from 1987 to 1993. Following their divorce, Bonet then dated Momoa in 2005 and the two tied the knot in 2017, but the pair then announced their shocking split at the start of this year. Bonet and Momoa share two children together: Lola and Nakoa-Wolf.

While the two hunky actors now both have Bonet as their ex, their bizarre yet adorable friendship and bromance has stayed strong. Here’s everything we know about their friendship.
It was love at first sight

“People can’t believe how tight Jason and I are, or how tight I still am with Zoë’s mum, how we all relate,” the singer told Men’s Health in 2020, further adding that, “We just do it because that’s what you do. You let love rule, right?”
Lenny also recalled the first time he met Momoa and felt an instant connection. “As far as Jason and I? Literally the moment we met, we were like, ‘Oh, yeah. I love this dude.’”

But it took years of healing and self-introspection for Lenny to reconcile with Bonet. He told The Times in 2019, “[Lisa and I] put the work in and we took the time so that we could become best friends again. Our families are blended.” The exes worked through their split that led Lenny to form a strong relationship with Momoa. “I love her [then] husband – he’s like a brother to me – and I love the kids. It’s beautiful, but it takes work.”
They got matching skull rings and are very supportive of each other

In 2018, Momoa announced on Instagram that he got matching skull rings for himself and Lenny. “I’m a huge fan of the artists I meet on Instagram and love spreading the aloha. I got @lennykravitz a present made by @leroyswoodentattoos amazing bone skull ring.” He further thanked the singer for supporting him during his SNL show. “Mahalo Lenny for coming to support me on @nbcsnl.”

The American Woman crooner also shared his own post of support for Momoa. He shared a selfie of himself sitting next to a sign of Momoa’s name and wrote, “My brother @prideofgypsies is doing his thing right now on @nbcsnl.”

Lenny and Momoa have also been crazily supportive of each other throughout the years. In 2021, Lenny shared a black-and-white snap of the two of them for Momoa’s birthday. He wrote, “Happy Birthday, @prideofgypsies. I’m proud to call you my brother. One love. One family.”
The Game of Thrones alum then responded with a comment on the heartfelt tribute. “Love u madly. Mahalo nui loa” along with two heart emojis.

Beyond birthday shout outs, Momoa has also praised Lenny for being a cooler dad than him about seeing his kid dating. In an interview with Men’s Health, Momoa said that he shared a close bond with Zoë, but he is a worrier when it comes to kids growing up. Lenny would handle it better, like when Zoë would bring home her boyfriends. “Lenny is way cooler than I am,” Momoa said. “I was baffled.” He shared that part of the reason he cried when his daughter Lola turned 13 was because he knew he would freak out once she started dating.
Momoa again praised Lenny for his parenting style and wished his own daughter would grow up to be like Zoë. “I love her dad. I hope and pray my daughter is that talented and loving and open and close to her family,” he said at Zoë’s wedding to Karl Glusman in 2019 (the two are now divorced).
They are one big ohana

While Lenny, Bonet and Momoa don’t necessarily follow the conventional family norms, the three of them still share love and respect for each other. Earlier this month, Momoa attended Zoë’s The Batman premiere with his two children to show his support.

“Lisa couldn’t be here so we’re representing, me and the babies. We’re very excited to just be here … It’s still family, you know?” he told Entertainment Tonight at the event.
Zoë also often calls Momoa “papa bear” on social media.

Lenny himself has opened up about successful co-parenting with Bonet in the past. “There’s no explanation for it. We experienced a very deep love that still carries on to this day, just in a different way,” he told Entertainment Tonight in October 2020.
“We all love each other and we all support each other,” the Grammy winner further explained. “[Momoa’s] a big teddy bear. He’s a kid at heart and that’s why I love him. We really love each other. We’re not only family, but friends.”
