Royal watchers the world over closely follow the moves of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle today, but before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex got hitched, there was Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy.
Harry met Davy during his gap year in Cape Town in 2004, according to The Independent. The two began an on-off relationship that would last the next seven years, throughout the couple’s most formative years as they navigated young adulthood together.

Raised in Zimbabwe, she was an unexpected choice of romantic partner for Prince Harry. She raised eyebrows both for her outsider status in British high society (she moved to England for school when she was 15) and her “party girl” reputation in the press.
In 2011, after years of trying to make it work, the two lovers eventually called it quits for good. Prince Harry went on to meet and fall in love with Markle, while Davy seemingly disappeared from the public eye – until news of her giving birth to a baby boy in January surfaced earlier this week.

After the break-up, Prince Harry and Davy reportedly remained on very good terms – so good, in fact, that she was invited to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011.

Despite having split weeks prior, the two spent the entire reception dancing and cuddling, and even reportedly spent the night together, according to British tabloids. But it was the last night they would share, as Davy officially cut things off after that point.

She put professional pursuits before her personal life

After the royal wedding hook-up, Prince Harry appeared to move on, starting a two-year relationship with socialite Cressida Bonas. Davy, on the other hand, stayed out of the limelight and began to focus intensely on her career. She accepted a position as an associate at a top international law firm, until she left the company in 2014 to start her own dream project in jewellery, per People.
Getting back on the dating scene

After switching careers and launching her own jewellery brand in 2016, it appears that Davy has finally had time for a personal life again. By 2018, she was seen showing some serious PDA with British TV producer James Marshall, according to British tabloids. Reportedly, some even wondered whether Markle had set the two up. That is because Marshall was actually married to Elettra Wiedemann – one of Markle’s dearest friends.

Is it possible Markle wanted Davy off the scene while she dated Harry? Regardless of whether a conspiracy was afoot, the relationship between Davy and Marshall fizzled out by the next year.

A promising pandemic romance

In 2020, Davy hinted that she might have finally found someone worthy of taking Prince Harry’s place in her heart. Speaking to Tatler, she said, “There is someone, and I am quite taken by this one, but it’s very new and I don’t want to say too much.”

That someone turned out to be Sam Cutmore-Scott, a British hotelier and an old Eton schoolmate of Prince Harry. After news of Davy’s covert pregnancy and childbirth broke, it also emerged that she and Cutmore-Scott have been living happily together in Chiswick – and he is reportedly the father to new baby Leo.
