Bliss out at Mexico’s Banyan Tree Mayakoba resort, a fusion of Thai and Mayan cultures

Elegant and eco-conscious, this resort in area dubbed the Venice of the Yucatan is a draw for honeymooners and those seeking a good rest

Describe this place in six words. The Venice of the Yucatan awaits.

Isn’t Venice in Italy? Well, yes. But we’re talking about the Venice of the Yucatan, and that’s in Mexico. A meticulously maintained ecosystem of mangroves, dunes and freshwater lagoons (which the locals call cenotes), Mayakoba occupies a verdant patch of the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean coast. Not part of the Cancun party scene, this eco-conscious resort development, about 40 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the hip haven of Playa del Carmen, is next to the world’s second largest coral reef. Set in a jungle-like environment teeming with wildlife, the resort is connected to the sea by evocative waterways. Guests travel by electric boat to the beach and between the three (soon to be four) hotels and their restaurants.
