48 HOURS: Do you believe that modern society is already sick to its core, as some of your films have depicted?
TETSUYA NAKASHIMA: I believe that must be the case somewhere, although probably not everywhere.
In Confessions (2010) and The World of Kanako (opens November 6), you show us parents who fail to realise that their children have been doing something very wrong. Why are you drawn to this topic?
You saw that many parental figures in my films fail to understand what their children are really up to, but this is indeed a common scenario that you can also find between partners and among friends. That's why although the characters in the films believe that they have a good understanding of others, that perception can't be any further from the truth. I take it as a fact that this lack of understanding is a prevalent condition for the human race. It takes effort to know a person. It's my view that, with most people, it's enough that you know only the basics about them.
Before these two recent films, which could be described as being downright immoral, you were used to making bittersweet dramas such as Kamikaze Girls (2004) and Memories of Matsuko (2006). Is there a reason behind the change in your mentality?
If you put it like that, perhaps I could say that I was more of an optimist in the past. As time has gone by, my mentality has changed. I think I'm now more capable of expressing my inner thoughts through my films.
The World of Kanako  is such a nihilistic movie that it doesn't appear to treat any topic as taboo. As a filmmaker, are there any subjects you shy away from?
Basically, the only subjects that I avoid are those that I have tackled before. I look to work with something new on every project to avoid repeating myself. So if someone asks me to make a sequel of Memories of Matsuko, or to take on the musical genre again, I'll say no.
The World of Kanako is f ull of evil characters and negative emotions. Would you agree that it may take a masochist to truly enjoy your movie?
It really depends on how the viewers approach the movie. In Japan, the audience reception has been split down the middle: there are people who like my film, and there are people who hate it with passion, even claiming that they'd never watched anything quite like it before. I think it's an accomplishment that I managed to create characters whom some viewers dislike so thoroughly, because it shows that the characters have made them feel something. It takes a good audience to hate my movie.
In your opinion, should young people be allowed to watch this movie?
I wouldn't judge my viewers by their age. By regulation, The World of Kanako is only for people aged 15 or above in Japan, so my audiences have sort of selected themselves. [In Hong Kong, it is classified Category III, for people aged 18 or above.] Personally, I don't think children should be prohibited from watching my movie. I trust my audiences to make their own judgments about the story. I don't think we should show children only the positive side of things and conceal the negative side from them. After all, the subjects of my movies do exist in reality.
Let's forget about the horrible people in your movies for a second. Would you say you're a kind person?
I think everybody has a good side and a bad side. I find it meaningless to determine whether a person is kind or wicked, because it inevitably takes both sides for life to become interesting.
Do you see your films primarily as art or entertainment?
My objective has always been to entertain — I've never set out to make art films — but I also think that entertainment movies don't necessarily have to cater their stories to the audiences. I'll let my audiences decide whether they like my movies. For me, it's important to broaden the scope of entertainment movies.
