Music stars take the corporate route: We might be at a point where the most exciting gigs in town are corporate private parties that double as marketing events. After Prada and Calvin Klein respectively brought singers Lorde and Justin Bieber to Hong Kong for semi-private shows in the recent past, H&M is following suit with its own show on July 15 at Hidden Agenda in Kwun Tong.
Although the line-up is a decidedly more indie affair, what the performers lack in mainstream star power they more than make up for in music industry buzz. Sharing top billing for "H&M Loves Music" are British singer and producer Blood Orange and Los Angeles beat maker Tokimonsta. Orange, real name Dev Hynes, wrote songs for The Chemical Brothers on their 2007 Grammy-winning album, We Are the Night, and works regularly with Solange Knowles (sister of Beyoncé). Tokimonsta, aka Jennifer Lee, is a Korean-American electronic DJ and the first woman to sign with underground hip-hop star Flying Lotus' label. Also on the bill is local trio Living Discoheads.

Strongman Yen uses the Force: Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Donnie Yen Ji-dan was considered a B-list action star, a tier below genre giants Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Undaunted, Yen kept reaching for stardom. And in 2008, he hit the jackpot with Ip Man, which finally cemented his status as a bankable leading man after decades of work — even if, along the way, he had gained a reputation with local media as an egomaniac. Yen's late career bloom is looking to jump another level, as he's reportedly been cast as a "Chinese Jedi" in the eighth instalment of the Star Wars franchise, which begins shooting this month and is scheduled for release in May 2017. Local media has for years mockingly referred to Yen as "Universe's Strongest". As a member of the Jedi Order, Yen might actually live up to that title.
