Forget the old saying: too much of any alcohol will lead to a hangover, no matter what order you drink it in.

If you’ve ever heard the saying “Beer before wine makes you feel fine; wine before beer makes you feel queer”, and taken it as official medical advice, we’ve got some bad news: the order in which you consume different alcoholic drinks makes no difference to your chances of suffering a hangover the next day, researchers have found.

The traditional piece of folk wisdom is an age-old English aphorism, and similar sayings also exist elsewhere in Europe. But scientists in Germany and England have now established that the order in which you consume drinks doesn’t matter.
