A green group has urged PCCW to withdraw shark's fin from its promotional gifts after a complaint against the city's largest fixed-line telephone service provider over its disregard for the environment.

Clarus Chu Ping-shing,  conservation officer for the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong, said using  shark's fin as a promotional item was bad for the company's image.

PCCW  is offering gift packs including shark's fin to customers who sign up to  its fixed-line services for 12 months. Also in the package are dried mushrooms.

The green group's call comes amid a growing campaign  against the consumption of shark fin in a bid to protect the species.

The University of Hong Kong recently banned shark-fin meals on campus and said it would not reimburse staff for shark's fin consumed at official banquets.

'This reflects how PCCW has neglected social responsibility,' Mr Chu said. 'They should withdraw  shark's fin from their package until there is a sustainable source of  shark's fin available.'

A spokesman for PCCW  did not say whether the company was going to  withdraw shark fin from the package,  nor would he say if  it would    ban it at  company business banquets.

'PCCW has many different promotions and offers to its customers according to their wants and needs. The gift pack is one of the many gift options during this period,' the spokesman said.

A Mid-Levels resident  who wrote to the Post about the promotional package said: 'This shows an incredible disregard for the environment. They are treating shark fins as if it were a stuffed animal or special giveaway gimmick. How can a large company in Hong Kong show such a lack of corporate responsibility?

'Clearly this is not something that customers demand as a gift because no one would think of demanding it or asking for it in the first place, particularly from a telecom company.'

He  also criticised the government  for failure to ban shark's fin.

'Hong Kong is the leading consumer in the world of this product, and taking a socially responsible lead to reduce consumption of shark's fin should not need a vote, feasibility study or protest to come to the understanding that this practice is unsustainable,' he said.
