Four masked men yesterday smashed 35 computers in a newly opened online games centre in Sheung Shui, in what police believe was an extortion-related attack.

Three staff and a customer witnessed the early morning incident at the 24-hour '911' Internet centre in Tsun Fu Street, after the perpetrators rushed into the premises and ordered employees to stop work.

The four men smashed 35 out of 42 computer monitors on the ground floor of the centre.

Before fleeing they told the employees that 'you cannot run a cyber cafe here'.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which occurred at about 3.30am. The centre, which opened on Monday, has 62 computer monitors on its ground and first floors and offers clients non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.

It was closed after the attack.

Acting Superintendent Wai Hang-mo, the assistant Tai Po district commander (Crime), said it appeared to be a triad-style attack.

'We believe the attack was a shop extortion case and could have been carried out by a triad gang in the area. Police are very concerned about such types of attacks,' he said.

Mr Wai said police would look into other possibilities.

It is understood the Wo Shing Wo triad society is an active gang in Sheung Shui and Fanling.

The owner of the centre, an indigenous villager in Ping Kong Tsuen, Sheung Shui, told investigators that there had been no demands for protection money.

'Triad members could approach a shop operator and demand a protection fee before its opening or come after an attack,' a police source said.

The source said triad gangs would commonly demand protection fees ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 a month.

It is the first attack against an Internet games centre in Sheung Shui and Fanling this year. There are about 15 online such centres in the area.

Last night, anti-triad officers from Tai Po police station were still hunting for the four attackers.
