Established in August 1998, the Department of Modern Languages and Inter- cultural Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong  opened the doors to its first batch of freshmen last September.

Its undergraduate programmes include courses on modern languages; linguistics and inter-cultural studies; and the inter-disciplinary option.

Department chairman  Professor Wong Kin-yuen said cultural studies originated in Britain and has bloomed in the United States in recent years.

Linguistics is the study of language systems, structure, use and acquisition - all very theoretical subjects, Professor Wong said.

Students have to take courses in phonetics, phonology, syntax and semantics, and even sign language.

Each student needs to learn another language aside from English and Chinese.

They can choose from French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

In addition,  courses on inter- cultural studies have been designed to broaden students' horizons. Subjects include literary criticism, philosophy, anthro pology, sociology, musicology, psychology and art theory.

The unique  part of the programme is inter-cultural studies which offers interesting and integrated subjects for students, such as inter-disciplinary studies of contemporary culture, cosmopolitan culture, the Hong Kong  urban environment, travel, culture and cyber culture.

'The word 'cyber' is popular in Hong Kong. Even kids talk  about information technology, yet the majority of people's perceptions still remain on a technical level. Few people talk about its cultural value,' said Professor Wong.

Everything ranging from films, Canto-pop songs, science fiction, television and comics is their subject matter, he said.

Students' training would allow them to see things from a different perspective.

After admitting their first batch of students last September, Professor Wong said some could not get used to the new approach to studying, while others were outstanding.

'Most Hong Kong students grew up in a 'spoon-feeding' education system in which they are too passive to acquire knowledge, or even ask a question.

'Some are not open enough to take on new concepts,' he said.

An open mind was essential, Professor Wong said, as there were a lot of new concepts  students had to take on. If they were too conservative, they would not be able to learn from new perspectives.

Graduates' career prospects would be excellent as they would be suited to jobs such as cultural critics, translators, journalists or even speech therapists.
